In The Lost Heroes Art Quilt, quilt artist Julie Feingold honors the memory of Americans who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars since September 11, 2001.
50 fallen heroes, one from each of the 50 states, are shown on the quilt. Childhood pictures of the fallen heroes are sewn into vintage GI Joe jackets. Words about the hero are printed on the sashing bordering their block. 32 more heroes appear in the upper border.
Feingold worked with Gold Star Mothers to obtain the childhood photographs used on the quilt and the families stories and memories. Read the artist's discussion of the symbolism in the quilt.
The Lost Heroes Art Quilt was dedicated in September 2009 in Washington, D.C. and has toured the United States (over 40 states) in the last 2 years. This is old news, but I just learned about this quilt in the November 2011 issue of American Quilter.
The quilt will be on permanent display in Washington, D.C. The video below tells the story of the quilt.
